Fifty Cups of Coffee #19: Laura Muller
Date: May 5, 2024
Location: Lake Tahoe, Nevada
How we know each other
Laura and I met during a blogger retreat in Lake Tahoe. She and I arrived at the airport around the same time, so we got some extra hang time along with Victoria of Pink Pop Media, as we headed to the retreat. It was so wonderful getting to know Laura during the retreat!
What Laura is doing now
Laura is a radio host and content creator. She owns foodanddealsbylaura.com and lasrecetasdelaura.com. She lives in Chicago, Illinois with her husband, their two children ages 9 and 5, and three cats.
Three questions
During these Fifty Cups of Coffee chats, I ask each person the same three questions. The reasoning behind each is as follows:
Question 1 – Social media makes it easy for other people to think that they know us, when truthfully, we all only see a small sliver of someone’s life and who they really are. This is the interviewee’s chance to share something that is important to them that, for whatever reason, other people may not know.
Question 2 – We all have fears, no matter who are are or where we are in life. This helps connect us and show we are all more alike than we are different.
Question 3 – I believe the answer to this question helps show each person’s true values, passions, and their why in life.
There are no right or wrong answers to any of these. I’m including each person’s answers in first person. Their answers have been edited from my notes for length and clarity, but these are their words.
What is one thing you wish more people knew about you?
“I wish more people knew about my diverse heritage. I come from a family of immigrants with a rich cultural background: my great-grandfather on my mother’s side was Chinese, and my great-grandmother on my father’s side was German. My mother’s family has Chinese roots, and although people often see me as a blonde Mexican, they are unaware of my great-grandmother’s Mexican and Indigenous heritage, as well as her husband’s Spanish origins. All my ancestors immigrated to Mexico, and I feel that immigration is deeply woven into my identity.”
“One of my passions is writing. I have a book published and a very successful column in major newspapers in Mexico for three years. At some point I would like to go back to writing. My grandmother and father were writers. What’s interesting is that my son has never seen me as a writer, and now he’s writing a book, and he’s 9. Some times genetics take over.”
What is your deepest fear?
“Probably dying before my children finish college. I just want to give them the tools to set them up for themselves. As an older mother, diabetes runs in my family, and I am always afraid I will get sick while my children are young.”
If you had unlimited funds, what would you do with your life?
“I would put money in my children’s college account, pay off the house – remodel and add extra rooms that we need – have a savings account for my husband and I for retirement, and donate the rest.”
Lessons Learned
I loved my coffee chat with Laura and learned a lot1
- Don’t judge a book by its cover. I know it’s cliche, but Laura’s first answer to the first question is a good reminder that there is so much more to all of us than what the eye can see. And, not to make quick assumptions.
- “Sometimes genetics takes over” – I loved this part of our conversation! It’s so fun to see our kids become who they are, but then still see parts of us parents and our ancestors in them as well.
- It’s never too late to pursue or continue a passion – I hope you do continue with your writings, Laura!
